The lead glazed, earthenware saucer is molded in a circular form and features a transfer printed image that depicts the Revolutionary War hero the Marquis de Lafayette at Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon held great significance for Lafayette as the home of George Washington, his great friend and mentor. Lafayette was reportedly overcome with emotion when visiting Washington’s tomb, and his secretary commented, “we resembled a bereaved family who had entombed a beloved father.”
