Schenectady NY - Resembling candles arranged in a figure "5" for a gigantic birthday cake, these "radiation pencils" salute the fifth anniversary of the General Electric Company's active work with atomic energy - five years without a single injury due to radiation. Produced by the Victorian Instrument Company, Cleveland Ohio, such pencils, known technically as pocket dosimeters are worn by people working near sources of radiation. When a person has finished any particular work period, the pencil indicates the amount of radiation to which he/she has been exposed. Regular checks on the pencils help keep exposure well below the minimum safety level. Miss Mary Calarneau of GE arranged the pencil design.
