In 1851, the stereoscope was presented at the London World Exhibition. It offered visual experiences that bordered on the miraculous, and yet it was also understood as a mirror of reality. The principle of it was simple: Two images that were slightly offset horizontally almost automatically created the impression of space and plasticity when viewed through the binocular stereoscope. By 1900, the new form of “television” had become a popular pastime. The small cards were distributed throughout the world and also served as illustrative material for scholastic purposes and as reference material in libraries.
