This image is a photochrome. Similar to a lithograph, the individual layers of color are printed separately and thus obtain their radiant colorfulness. A black-and-white photograph by the Bavarian court photographer Joseph Albert served as a model for the printing process. Albert photographed the interiors of Neuschwanstein in 1886, the year King Ludwig II died; the prints were published in 1887.
