Small bowl

Margarete Heymannca. 1945-1965

Jewish Museum Berlin

Jewish Museum Berlin
Berlin, Germany

The small bowl sits on a stand ring. The smooth sides are indented in four places, giving the bowl an undulating floral form, and vertical lines are incised on the bowl interior. The bowl is painted with engobe in graduated shades of brown.

The bowl was produced in exile in England by the ceramicist Margaret Marks (formerly Margarete Heymann-Loebenstein). After the Second World War, Marks set up a pottery studio in London. The work she produced at this time was very much influenced by that of the ceramicist Lucie Rie, who was also a Jewish immigrant to England. This bowl attests to Rie’s influence.
