Using huge amounts of antibiotics to treat one disease is dangerous - the more antibiotics we use, the easier it is for bacteria to develop resistance. All of these antibiotics would not be necessary if we had an effective vaccine against tuberculosis, which would prevent people from catching TB in the first instance. One experimental vaccine, MTBVAC, is currently being trialled in South Africa and shows some promise.
