Sculptural ceramic ceremonial vessel that represents a feline ML017900

This sculptural ceramic bottle represents a sitting puma. The puma and the jaguar, both big felines of the Andean region, are animals that symbolize the power of the terrestrial world. The political and religious leaders of pre-Columbian societies identified with them, and this is expressed in the way they were represented, with feline fangs. In this case, the fangs of the puma have been made in shell. (UH)

Esta botella escultórica de cerámica representa un puma sentado. Los grandes felinos del área andina, como el puma y el jaguar, son los animales que simbolizan el poder del mundo terrestre. Los líderes político-religiosos de las sociedades precolombinas se identificaban con ellos, y esto se expresó en la manera cómo eran representados, con los colmillos del felino. En este caso, los colmillos del puma han sido confeccionados en concha. (UH)
