Sculptural ceramic ceremonial vessel that represents the Owl-god ML012866

This is a sculptural ceramic jar depicting the Moche Owl God. The personage is standing up, with an owl face. He has wings instead of arms, but is represented with human-like legs. His dress has a design of interlocking waves. He stands under an arch, which is pained with colored rectangles. This arch is a two-head snake with feline heads. The same interlocking wave motif that is painted on the shirt of the Owl God is painted at the top of the jar. The Owl God is considered one of the mayor gods of the Moche. It is a sacred animal associated with the upper world and also to the night. The piece as a whole refers to the link between elements belonging to different worlds, but which are actually complementary: the spirals on the clothing, the waves pained on the edge of the jar, and the two-headed snake under which the Owl God stands. The two-head snake represents both the Milky Way -understood as a river running through the night sky- and the rainbow -colorful bridge in the sky that appears when rain cease and sunshine is announced. Both the Milky Way and the Rainbow link the heavenly with the earthly plane, one by night, the other by day. This jar shows the union or connection of opposite yet complementary forces, the central concept of the Andean worldview. (UH)

Este es un cántaro escultórico de cerámica que representa al dios búho Mochica. Se trata de un personaje que se encuentra de pie, cuyo rostro tiene rasgos de búho, especialmente las orejas y ojos. El personaje tiene alas en vez de brazos, pero se le representa con piernas de forma humana. Su vestimenta tiene un diseño de olas entrelazadas. El personaje se encuentra bajo un arco, que está pintado con recuadros bicolores; este arco tiene en sus dos extremos, cabezas de felino. En la parte superior de la apertura del cántaro se puede ver el mismo motivo de olas entrelazadas que se encuentra en la camisa del personaje. El dios búho es considerado uno de los principales dioses de los Mochicas. Es un animal sagrado asociado al mundo superior y también a lo nocturno. La pieza en su conjunto hace referencia al vínculo entre elementos pertenecientes a mundos opuestos, que son en realidad complementarios. Están los espirales de la vestimenta, las olas entrelazadas en el borde del cántaro, y la serpiente bicéfala bajo la cual se encuentra el dios búho. La serpiente representa tanto a la vía láctea, entendida como un río que atraviesa el firmamento nocturno, como al arco iris, colorido puente en el cielo que aparece cuando la lluvia cesa y se anuncia nuevamente el brillo solar. Tanto la vía láctea, como el arco iris unen el plano celeste con el terrenal, uno de noche, el otro de día. Este cántaro muestra la confluencia o unión de fuerzas opuestas, concepto central de la cosmovisión andina. (UH)
