This is a remarkable piece representing an anthropomorphic bat, whose pectoral attire and bracelets reveal its symbolic importance. Even though this supernatural creature appears often in Mochica artistic expression, it is difficult to determine the exact role it played in that society’s mythology. There are various scenes in which appears as a prominent member in ritual sacrifice ceremonies. For example, it can be seen as a member of the funeral procession at the bottom of one of the murals at the Pañamarca site. In another scene –this time painted in a fine line on ceramic– the character is slitting the throat of a naked prisoner, whilst his blood is collected in a pottery cup. The bat may also appear in conflict with the figure known as Split-top or “Pelo-dividido”. But beyond its specific function, the presence of these deified figures in ritual scenes refer to symbolic images that only existed at myth level. (CD)
