Around 1900 there was a request for a monument to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union. The 33-foot high work "Autour du monde" (Around the World) by the French sculptor René de Saint-Marceaux was inaugurated in 1909 in Bern, the headquarters of the Universal Postal Union. Five female figures, symbolizing the continents, float around the globe, symbolically conveying letters to each other. Next to it sits Berna, a personification of the city of Bern. Her outstretched right hand rests on the city's coat of arms.
