These remarkable objects are an illustration of Queen Victoria’s desire to capture fleeting likenesses and souvenirs of her children. Each of the marble limbs was carved on the basis of a cast, made from moulds of plaster. Because of the funerary associations of marble, these limbs might be imagined to be memorials of children who died in infancy. In fact, all nine of the Queen’s children survived well into adulthood.
