Not only a painting of an Indian subject, this is a painting of movement. “When I saw this girl, I was struck by how gracefully and quietly she moved,” Eileen said. “She was in her own world.” The swish and swirl of the background emphasis accents the movement of the girl’s legs and arms, the sash around her waist that flares outward, and the “bouquet” of onions, tumbling off to the right. Then there is calm, noted in the girl’s closed eyes, the upward lift of onions with her right arm, and not incidentally, the white void of much of the pristine background. The EMW signature at top left completes composition balance.
