Sea Limits

This lithograph by Skiold is inscribed with a poem by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828 - 1882), 'The Sea Limits', which is Song XI of Rossetti's 'Poems' (1870).

Skiöld, originally from Stockholm, moved to Britain in 1948. Skiöld is best remembered for her inventive approach to printmaking though she was primarily a painter. Lithography, the technique used to make Sea Limits, was popular with printmakers in the 1960s.

Skiöld ran the Print Workshop, a dedicated artists’ workspace in London, from 1958 onwards. She was also a founding member of the Printmaker’s Council, which she chaired from 1972 - 1974. She also played an important part in setting up the British International Print Biennale in Bradford in 1962.
