Seahorse

Naturalis Biodiversity Center
Leiden, Netherlands

Its snout resembles that of a horse. The seahorse looks very sweet, but appearances are deceiving. It’s a real hunter. From a distance of 3 cm, it can suck up shrimps and other small creatures.

When seahorses mate, the female lays eggs in the male’s pouch. The male then fertilises the eggs and looks after them until they hatch. During the pregnancy, the seahorses perform a graceful dance, during which they change colour, curl up their tails and circle each other. Seahorses stay together for life.
