London, United Kingdom

This walrus ivory seal-die of 'Godwin the thegn' (not believed to be Earl Godwin himself) was later reused by a nun named Godgytha. Anglo-Saxon seal matrices are rare and their use is not properly understood; late Anglo-Saxon charters and writs have written 'signatures' rather than wax seals.
