Pont-Aven, France

This canvas hung in the reading room at the Hotel Julia on the same wall as Robert Wylie’s Self-Portrait, also now in the Museum’s collection. As the archives show, Julia Guillou was dedicated to helping artists and encouraging their work in Pont-Aven, and was happy to exhibit numerous canvases in her hotels. This work by an as yet unknown author depicts a seascape with a ship and its crew at its centre. The characters DOA 3005 inscribed on the sail are perhaps a Dover identification number. The dark tones of sea and sky, as well as the positioning of the boat, indicate that a storm is at hand
