Seashell Telephone 1-5

Kiván Quiñones’s work is interested in finding images and objects that highlight the Afro-Caribbean imaginary. Seashell Telephone 1-5 redefines the language of a found object with the purpose of identifying the conch shell not only as an artistic element, but also as a portal, a means of communicating with ancestors. Quiñones’s work looks at the found object from the surrealist point of view, considering the possibility of the object as a recipient. Eleggua, the messenger of the orishas, the conch shell also symbolizes the divinity of the forms. The sonorous rumble emanating from the shell is a method of communication that emphasizes the importance, in Quiñones’s practice, of listening and of being sensible to the immaterial.
