Hung in the Great Hall in Hestercombe House until 1872 when it was sold at auction, this massive self-portrait was found again 120 years later in a Dorset country house and restored. In 1761 Phelps and Bampfylde jointly painted a second picture, copying Van Dyke’s Charles I through the Triumphal Arch which was originally painted for St James’s Palace.
