Alberto Stringa (1880-1931) showed a passion for painting from a young age, which he refined during his high school years, thanks to the teachings of painter Francesco Danieli. Having obtained a degree in Law from the University of Padua in 1902, Stringa decided to embark on a series of trips throughout Europe. In Paris, he had the opportunity to study with Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir directly, by then historical reference points for the many artists tired of 19th-century academicism. It was through reworking the insights of certain French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism that Stringa came to develop a loose and energetic style, vibrant and intense in color, evident in the "Self-Portrait" of 1914.
