Self Portrait

Bertel Thorvaldsenc. 1810

Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana

Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana
Milano, Italy

The Danish artist Bertel Thorvaldsen is considered to be one of the greatest Euro
pean neoclassical sculptors. In this self portrait, he has shaped his face in the heroic style, and this is emphasised by its larger-than-life, semi-colossal dimensions. The inspiration from classical sculpture can also be seen in the elegantly wavy hair, which gives the portrait a sense of the ideal.
