This self-portrait is based on an earlier copperplate engraving by Aldegrever. This kind of repetition was quite common at the time: prints served as the starting point for further exploration. The lines in this drawing helped the artist to keep close to the original proportions of his model.

  • Artist Biography: Probably trained in Soest, the painter joined the workshop of Ludger tom Ring the Elder in 1521. Later, impressed by the work of Albrecht Dürer, he turned to copperplate engraving and created a series of outstanding portraits in that medium as well as depictions of biblical and mythological figures. Aldegrever was a committed supporter of the Reformation.
