Hugo Scheiber was a Hungarian modernist painter. Scheiber's early works bear the marks of Impressionism and Plain-Air. Later he developed his own style under the influence of the Weimar Expressionism and Futurism. His best works represent the 20th century Hungarian painting at an international level. He participated in the Bauhaus exhibition in Berlin, and his works were on show in Italy and the USA. His self-portrait combines the typical features of his works: dynamic expressionism, breaking down parts of the face in a cubistic style, grotesque emphasis of these elements against each other, and the rapid and feverish pace of elaboration.
