Jacques Vaillant, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and then at the Académie Humbert, set up his studio in Montmartre, where he came into contact with many Parisian painters. He regularly stayed in Brittany, notably in Brigneau, where he reconnected with Maurice Asselin and distanced himself from the Cubist and Fauvist movements. This self-portrait depicts him around the age of forty, in a restrained and introspective image.
