Alcide Le Beau, influenced by the Pont-Aven masters, settled in Paris around 1890 while regularly returning to Brittany. He moved away from Impressionism to join the avant-garde. In this self-portrait, he depicts himself painting, pipe in mouth, looking directly at the viewer in a play of reversed gazes.
