This expressive self-portrait by Rembrandt marks a turning point in the life of the young Dutch artist: It is the first time he presents himself to the public as a self-confident young man in nobleman's clothing. For many years, the work was taken to be a workshop copy, but in 1998, an examination confirmed it to be genuine. As a result, it became one of the prominent treasures in the museum’s collection.
