This photograph, showing Munch lying next to the bathtub, bears the title "Marat in the Bath". The forceful foreshortening reflects the many depictions of himself "á la Marat" in his works. Munch has been looking into the lens at close range, creating an aggressive, foreshortened perspective which breaks up the foreground; a style we recognize in such apparently different subjects as "John Gabriel Borkman", "Dead", "The Yellow Tree Trunk" and "Workers Returning Home".
