After a short period at the National School of Fine Arts in Lima, in 1921 Carlos Quízpez Asín traveled on a bursary to Madrid to continue his studies at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In Paris, in 1925, through his brother Alfredo (César Moro) he connected with the avant-guard movements of the period and, on returning to Peru, participated in the “Independents”, a group that battled for modernity in opposition to Indigenism. This mature self-portrait synthesizes the figure of the painter by means of a modernist lineal sobriety of classical inspiration, and places it within a rigorous pictorial conception that evokes the post-cubist trend present in his mural compositions.
