Billie Zangewa often refers to her silk collages as "mirrors" — intimate, reflective portraits that centre the everyday experiences of Black women, particularly herself. Through these works, she explores identity, domestic life, motherhood, and selfhood, offering a form of visual self-examination. Rather than idealised representations, these "mirrors" reveal the beauty and complexity of ordinary moments, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own lives and perceptions in return. These altered mirrors, titled Self-Reflection, are being shown for the first time at Norval Foundation in the exhibition Billie Zangewa: Breeding Ground. The exhibition is curated by Anelisa Mangcu and runs from 18 February 2024 to 11 January 2026.
