“(Ling) says: For a movement to take a curative form, a good assessment of its extent and intensity is essential. A century ago, he [Pehr Henrik Ling] stated the following valuable words in his gymnastics instructions published in 1836: ‘It is essential to have knowledge of natural duties of the organs in order for the body to fully benefit from its movements. This awareness enables us to establish our intention. By taking an individuals’ physical improvement into consideration within the social structure, it can be easily concluded that the health should be determined based on scientific merits, the body should be developed in accordance with the principles of physiology, and the muscles should function consistent with the body’s mobility. Acknowledging these norms will forestall the errors occuring in the education system as well as some dangerous and unhealthy approaches, particulary focusing on the means as a main purpose. With this truth out, no one will enslave their bodies to the so-called gymnastic apparatus, and will not immerse themselves to the harmful agents for bravura. If the laws of the body and the degree of influence of the movements are not recognized, then the body often does not form in a manner appropriate to the real needs of life and the social aims of physical training. Getting physical activity in a nurturing way means that anybody can have a harmonious and consistent body health, convenient to their talents and inclinations.’”
