A large 'calao' ancestral bird kept by a men's secret society (Poro) in a secret forest, was used in rites for male initiatesto the final phase of training. The bird also represents the first ancestor and is a primary symbol of Poro leadership. It is also a symbol of fertility with the bulbous stomach representing a pregnant woman and the beat representing the male sexual organ.
