Sensing Streams – invisible, inaudible(2014)

Ryuichi Sakamoto, a musician and Daito Manabe, a media artist collect electromagnetic waves from the environment and realize sensory world with visual and auditory images. <sensing streams>– invisible, inaudible(2014) dynamically displays visual traits of electromagnetic waves from communication technologies and mobile equipment. In the exhibition space where the work is installed, electromagnetic waves between 80MHz-5.2GHz that are captured in real time by antennas set up in various places in the venue, which collect signals from wireless communication equipment, Wi-Fi, digital TV, and FM radio. Captured electromagnetic waves are displayed on a large projection image and sound is also played through speakers on both sides. In addition, through the process in which data collected from the existing exhibitions are compared with electromagnetic waves data saved in Gwangju, it is shown that there are differences in numeric value of electromagnetic waves depending on time and place.

Ryuichi Sakamoto's work includes many areas such as composition, performance, producing and environment protection activity. He leads electronic music as a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra. Japan’s electronic music band, and participated in classical pieces, minimal/ambient music collaborations, and over 30 film scores.

Daito Manabe is a media artist, interaction designer, and programmer who works in Tokyo, Japan. He launched Rhizomatiks in 2006. Since 2015, he has served alongside Motoi Ishibashi as co-director of Rhizomatiks Research. He mainly deals with development intensive projects dedicated to exploring new possibilities in the realms of technical and artistic expression.
