About the artist: Christine Trella Koczwara (1945 – 2020)
Christina “Trella” Koczwara received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Ringling School of Art and Design in 1967 and a Master of Fine Arts from William Paterson University, New Jersey, in 1972. In 1970, she was invited to go to Vietnam as the Marine Corps’ first woman civilian combat artist. While there, she documented Recon Marines, an orphanage located on China Beach, and the local people. From 1972 to her retirement in 2009, she taught painting at Tennessee Tech University. She died in November 2020.
