Pier Paolo Calzolari employs diverse materials, privileging those that are “alive” and that change over time – like moss, tobacco leaves, ice and wax – a factor that places him close to the Arte Povera movement. Calzolari’s work has been characterised by a poetic of the sublime from his debut in the mid-1960s. This is reflected in the materials chosen and their living and transformative quality. His work is rich in emotive and sensorial cues, combining poetry and the everyday, simultaneously involving a number of senses and creating a unique experience. Between 1967 and 1970 the artist created a group of works, including this "Untitled", which well represents his poetic of the sublime through an allegorical writing composed of everyday and natural materials suggesting more profound relationships with time, culture and history.
