About the craft: Seraikela Chhau is a refined masked dance tradition of eastern India, inscribed in the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010. In the princely landscape of Seraikela, founded in the 17th century, it evolved under the patronage of the Singh Deo dynasty—from martial ritual into a highly stylised, deeply codified, and quietly evocative art form shaped by lineage and grace. The dancers perform stories, depicting characters from myth to taking inspiration from nature. Seraikela Chhau masks are subtle and refined, depicting the navarasas; they are handcrafted with clay, and dyed with pigments from the earth. The dance form is currently kept alive in villages and towns across the district of Seraikela Kharsawan, Jharkhand, today.
