Carte de visite of 54th Regiment Sergeant Major John H. Wilson, who served in Company G. Wilson was a painter in Cincinnati, Ohio when he enlisted at age 23. Wilson was promoted to Sergeant in May of 1863 and wounded at the Battle of Fort Wagner on July 18, 1863. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major in April of 1864.
