Serpents were the bass instruments of wind and military bands before the tuba took over. They are usually carved from wood with leather binding but making one from copper is probably a better idea if you are playing outdoors in Scotland. This example is also unusual in being made in mirror-image to most serpents, perhaps for a left-handed musician.
