Serpentine Gallery Pavilions: Annual Architectural Commissions and Public Programmes

The centrepiece of the design for the 2006 Pavilion was a spectacular ovoid-shaped inflatable canopy that floated above the Gallery’s lawn. Made from translucent material, the canopy was raised into the air or lowered to cover the amphitheatre below according to the weather. A frieze designed by Thomas Demand marked the first collaboration between an artist and the designers of the Pavilion. The walled enclosure below the canopy functioned both as a café and forum for public programmes.

  • Serpentine Gallery Interview Marathon, 28 - 29 July 2006: Serpentine Gallery Interview Marathon was the first 24-hour non-stop Marathon staged in and around the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2006, designed by Rem Koolhaas and Cecil Balmond, with Arup. Guests came from a spectrum of fields and disciplines, from artists and writers to scientists and historians, and included David Bailey, Zygmunt Bauman, Hussein Chalayan, Brian Eno, Gilbert & George, Zaha Hadid, Richard Hamilton, Damien Hirst, Jude Kelly, Hanif Kureishi, Doris Lessing, Ken Loach, Gautam Malkani, Richard Rogers, and Juergen Teller. Developed and hosted by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Rem Koolhaas, Serpentine Gallery Interview Marathon was devised in association with a team of guest advisers. The Marathons are an extension of Hans Ulrich Obrist’s renowned interview series and other projects and exhibitions on which he has collaborated with Rem Koolhaas, such as Cities on the Move and Mutations, which explored notions of the city and how to create a ‘portrait’ of ever-changing cities at a given moment. Rem Koolhaas intended for the Pavilion to be ‘architecture of content,’ with particular attention paid to the conversations, discussions and events that take place within it. Beyond exhibitions, this project raised the question of how new communication methods and formats could be created for discussing culture and society, encouraging both a venturing out from art into other disciplines and a crossover of their respective audiences. Participants included: Åbäke, Sir Kenneth Adam, David Adjaye, Tariq Ali, Ron Arad, Shumon Basar, Anat Ben-David, Eleanor Bron, Hussein Chalayan, Michael Clark, Peter Cook, Mark Cousins, Giles Deacon, Marcus du Sautoy and Pedro Ferreria, Tony Elliott, Paul Elliman, Brian Eno, Sophie Fiennes, Ryan Gander, Gilbert & George, Jonathan Glancey, Zaha Hadid, Richard Hamilton, Russell Haswell, Roger Hiorns, Susan Hiller, Damien Hirst, Eric Hobsbawm, Charles Jencks, Jude Kelly, Isaac Julien, Patrick Keiller, Jude Kelly, Hanif Kureishi, Scott Lash, Doris Lessing, Ken Loach, Gautam Malkani, Doreen Massey, Tom McCarthy, Gustav Metzger, Mary Midgley, Markus Miessen, Chantal Mouffe, Tim Newburn, Julia Peyton-Jones, Olivia Plender, Milan Rai, Peter Saville, Marjorie Scardino, Denise Scott Brown, Yinka Shonibare, Squarepusher, Iain Sinclair, Caruso St John, Juergen Teller, Tim O’Toole, Marina Warner, Eyal Weizman, Richard Wentworth, Jane and Louise Wilson, Cerith Wyn Evans.
