José dos Reis Carvalho (ca. 1798/1800 - Rio de Janeiro, ca. 1892?) Was a Brazilian painter, draftsman and teacher. In 1824, he joined the first class of the painting course at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts (AIBA), when he was a student of Jean-Baptiste Debret. He was a member of the Scientific Exploration Commission, responsible for documenting the ethnographic, zoological and botanical aspects of the Brazilian hinterland, between 1859 and 1861.
There's an inscription: "Serra do Arerê, on the edge of Jaguaribe river, a league and a half from the city of Aracati, has a deep cave"
