The service record has a variety of information on the military career and private life of this nobleman. The commandant of the city of Pärnu, who was decorated with the Order of St. George, fourth class, started service in 1783 as an NCO. He moved quickly up the ladder, was promoted to major general, taking part in many military operations – in the siege of the Izmail fortress in Bessarabia during the Russo-Turkish War, and suppressing the Greater Poland Uprising. In 1794, while crossing the Visla in battle, Budberg was wounded. He was again wounded, this time seriously, in fighting against the French army in 1807. The baron was appointed commandant of Pärnu after peace was restored. He was proficient in spoken and written Russian and German, never went on holiday, and had a clean disciplinary record during service. Von Budberg, who was discharged at age 48, remained unmarried.
