There are several vehicles that had to be created or adapted for specific purposes, to respond to situations such as accidents, derailments and breakdowns that occurred on the railway.
This is the case with this service wagon for assistance on the line and built in 1891 by the French company Désouches David & Cie., a regular manufacturer of coaches and saloons. To help with emergencies, it transported materials and equipment necessary to carry out this work, which we can still see displayed as if kept in a time capsule. Inside, it is possible to see the olive oil or petrol lantern on the roof for lighting (common in the coaches of the time), the absence of ventilators on the sides and steps to facilitate access to the interior.
This wagon also has a special feature, the guard’s compartment, common in wagons with manual brakes. This section gave some protection to the brake guards who used and applied the brake according to the signals that the drivers made to them through a strict whistle code.
