Serving in Cuba and Mexico

The “8th Illinois U.S. Volunteers” fought in the Spanish-American War, commanded by Col. John R. Marshall. In 1898, the regiment went to Cuba, hoping heroic efforts would win them more than just praise and civil rights back home. While the soldiers never made it to the battlelines, they helped rehabilitate war-torn villages, allowing black soldiers to exercise leadership abilities.
