Bronze bell from the original Seton Hall College campus in Madison, New Jersey. The bell was used to call the school day to order and signal class times throughout the day from the 19th century through at least the 1960s. Various Student Handbooks of the mid-twentieth century mention under the section "Discipline" and under the sub-heading "Bells" that "All bells are to be answered promptly."
