Sintra, Portugal

Settee-extendable bed, made of walnut, in the King José style, with red silk damask upholstery of great decorative richness, displaying remarkable technique in the carving of the walnut, a wood that is highly appreciated in the manufacture of luxury furniture. The settee’s slender arms contrast with the dynamism of the composition of the curved back, in which the pierced splat and neck are both carved with a decoration of highly shaped asymmetrical motifs.
This large-sized piece of seating furniture has the peculiarity that, when opened, it is transformed into a bed, thanks to its extendable structure, which conceals a second cushion. In this way, it combines a functional component with the characteristics of display furniture.
