This is a sewing machine used for stitching materials such as fabric, paper, or leather to make clothes or household items. A sewing machine is one of the most precise instruments used in everyday life. The earliest sewing machine used a needle with an eye, and the invention of the lockstitch machine allowed sewing using upper and lower threads. Improving upon the early lockstitch machine, American inventor Elias Howe succeeded in assembling and patenting a more practical and complete lockstitch machine. A sewing machine was an essential item for making clothes in households before the mass production of ready-made dresses. It was also favored as a bride’s dowry. The sewing machine shown here was operated by hand and stored in a wooden case.
