"Steve Austin, astronaut, a man barely alive. We can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to make the world's first bionic man. Steve Austin will be that man. Better than he was before. Better . . . stronger . . . faster." So began the 1970s television series that inspired Kenner Products to create this action figure in 1975. Based on Martin Caidin's 1972 science-fiction novel Cyborg, the TV series recounts the adventures of Air Force Colonel Steve Austin. When Austin is critically injured in a plane accident, his doctors replace his legs, right arm, and left eye with "bionic" body parts. Austin puts his superhuman powers to work protecting America from a slew of evil villains. Not a typical action figure, this doll incorporates the fictional hero's incredible abilities. Look through his left eye and see through a mini telescope; check out the removable bionic parts in his arm. The doll even has bionic strength of its own and can lift up to two pounds! Not bad for 13 inches of plastic! This doll was the first of many "Six Million Dollar Man" products introduced during the series' four-year run, from 1974-1978.
