Shah Jahan’s Coins

Shah Jahan’s coins did not lack any artistic merit, his earlier coins both silver and gold has Kalima and mint name on obverse and emperor’s name and title on reverse. He had endless types and varieties of coinage, varying in shapes such as square, circle and lozenges, enclosing Kalima on the obverse and title and name on the reverse.

Shahjahanama mentions his big coins of 400, 300 & 200 tolas in weight presented to Ambassador of Persia – Muhammad Ali Beg. The biggest coin available was minted at Lahore in 1639, weighs 1094.5 grams and measures 9.5 cms in dia.

Shah Jahan’s wealth could be assessed by his coin production. At least about 30 millions of rupees, supplemented with equal worth of gold and copper.
