One-piece front plate with openings in the eyes and nostrils. Mouth with long and protruding tongue; animal nose; donkey ears placed laterally in the mask; on the forehead, a hook hangs an iron bell. The mask is fastened on the head of the punished´ s person, by an iron structure, which closes with a padlock.
Mask specially designed to publicly punish and humiliate women in Europe, during the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
The big ears meant that she had overheard, and her huge, balancing tongue meant that she had talked too much and had invented stories about others and that she was an incorrigible snoopy. Her nose, like a pig, indicated that the carrier had behaved like an animal. The sounding of the bell, was intended for public humiliation of the punished women. The mask is fastened on the head of the punished s person, by an iron structure, which closes with a padlock.
