One of two identical star-shaped medallions (known as shamsas, shams meaning sun), on the first pair of facing pages in this Qur'an. The words spread across both shamsas are written in the white tawqi script and depict verse 17:88 of the Qur'an (al-Isra / The Night Journey), found at the beginning of many Persian Qur'ans of the sixteenth century.
