Peter Lenzo (1955–2024) was an American ceramic artist celebrated for his innovative reinterpretations of traditional Southern face jugs. Born in New York City and raised in Detroit, Lenzo's passion for ceramics began at age ten with classes at the School of Arts and Crafts in Detroit. He earned his MFA from Wayne State University and later taught at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. In the 1990s, after developing a seizure disorder, Lenzo turned exclusively to clay, creating distinctive sculptures that often featured distorted facial expressions and fantastical elements, reflecting his personal experiences and Southern folk traditions.
Lenzo's work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the South Carolina Triennial exhibitions at the South Carolina State Museum and the 701 CCA South Carolina Biennial. His pieces are part of several museum collections, such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Renwick Gallery, the South Carolina State Museum, and the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina. Throughout his career, Lenzo received acclaim for his unique approach to ceramic sculpture, blending traditional forms with contemporary themes to explore complex personal and cultural narratives.
