Braith was a member of the Munich School of painters in Germany and specialized in animal subjects such as this example. He grew up the son of a farm laborer and himself helped herd cattle. His large-scale paintings became widely popular because they evoked a sense of nostalgia in an rapidly industrializing society in Germany.
